Overview

Responsible for researching, developing and delivering the most up to date evidence based education to patients during the prenatal and postpartum period.  The purpose of the education is to empower mothers and significant others to make informed decisions in regards to their pregnancy and newborn.  This position is also responsible for assisting the director in creating, enforcing, and maintaining all of the Baby Friendly standards. 

Responsibilities

  • Delivers general nursing care to patients from the prenatal period through adolescence, serving the nursing care needs of families as well. 
  • Administers prescribed medications and treatment following approved nursing procedures and physician order. 
  • Observes patients, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or physician of conditions and significant incidents. 
  • Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment and examinations of patients. 
  • Assesses patient vital signs to detect deviations from normal and determines patient progress. 
  • Has daily responsibility in areas of personnel assignments, supervises licensed and non-licensed personnel, patient placement, cost containment, patient and family education and customer satisfaction. 

Qualifications

  • Performs physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational assessment/reassessment of patients utilizing knowledge of growth and development specific to the age of population served in the area and per unit policy.  
  • Utilizes standards of practice to guide assessments.
  • Identifies immediate, short term and long term needs of patient and develops plan for and education based on assessment/reassessment findings.
  • Interacts with a multidisciplinary team as indicated to provide for patient and family needs.
  • Implements and documents appropriate nursing actions/interventions based on assessment/reassessment findings, i.e., protocols, interventions based on standards of practice.
  • Educates patients and family accurately on appropriate topics based on diagnosis, treatments, procedures and discharge needs identified through the assessment findings.
  • Successfully completes annual competencies.
  • Attains and maintains BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications as required ED, CCU, and PCU positions.  PALS is required for the MCN position. 
  • Exhibits sound judgment in routine and crisis situations.
  • Responds to “Code Blue” per policy and performs in a competent manner.
  • Conducts feeding support groups to continue to educate and support breastfeeding mothers.
  • Conducts Breastfeeding Education class for prenatal mothers.  This includes staying up to date with most recent research and recommendations.
  • Conducts an all-day prenatal class monthly providing up to date information for informed decision making.
  • Conducts an Early Prenatal Education class in order to help mothers to start making good decisions early in their pregnancy.
  • Conducts an evening Prenatal Class providing up to date information for informed decision making.
  • Assist with annual competencies for further staff development.
