Overview

Following completion of clinical lab-based checkoffs, and while currently participating in clinical observations with an accredited RN program, the Student Nurse Extern (SNE) will practice under supervision of a Registered Nurse. The SNE will strive to provide high quality, evidence based care to patients compliant with current scope of practice. Each SNE will gain experience from multiple inpatient unit experiences to gain a working knowledge of the healthcare team and structure. This position requires a team-based approach to providing Patient-Centered Care and working as a multidisciplinary team in order to benefit the wellbeing and safety of each individual.

Responsibilities

  • Responds promptly to patient care needs, requests, and call lights
  • Must be committed to making lasting connections and providing safe, evidence-based care within the scope of a student nurse extern
  • Applies ice packs, restraints (with MD order and RN initiation), and binders
  • Gather equipment or supplies for RN or MD procedure while maintaining sterile technique if indicated
  • Perform EKG
  • Placement of patient on telemetry
  • Apply AED
  • Apply SCDs with MD order and with direction from RN
  • Perform Point of Care testing as directed
  • Provides input into patient plan of care
  • Understands and supports application of unit/department/hospital policies, procedures and standards
  • Assist in identifying long and short-term patient goals from information gathered from daily assessment
  • Accurately communicates patient information to the registered nurse

Qualifications

  • Work requires a basic knowledge of pathophysiology, the nursing process, nursing interventions, pharmacology, methods utilized for delivering nursing care, and the management of patients and personnel
  • This level of education is normally acquired through the completion of a nursing curriculum at an RN accredited school of nursing
  • Awaiting Indiana State Board testing results for Indiana State RN licensure, or reciprocity for Indiana licensure
  • Current enrollment in an accredited Registered Nurse program
  • Successful completion of clinical lab check-offs of an accredited Registered nursing program
  • Current BLS certification
